Every neighbourhood has one geography drawn by its streets and another built by the people who live its encounters. In Botafogo, that second map runs through townhouses, stages, kitchens, studios, bars and cultural projects that keep the area moving through the day.
At Surreal, that way of occupying Botafogo got a name: Lado S.
The idea runs through the architecture, the menu, the cocktails, the music and the way the house welcomes each person. It is the creative territory of Surreal Bar in Botafogo, where references from different eras and languages share the same room.
Surreal opened its doors in 2019, on Rua Paulo Barreto. Since then, the townhouse has brought together signature cooking, house cocktails, live music and a visual curation marked by art and pop culture.
Lado S emerged as a summary of that identity.
The letter points to the name of the house and works as the signature of an atmosphere of its own. It holds the sound from the stage, the fire that comes with some dishes, the lights that transform the room and the references scattered across the walls.
The idea also expresses a relationship with Botafogo. The neighbourhood combines residential life, busy streets, cultural centres, cinemas, studios, restaurants, music venues and historic addresses. That mix offers ground for projects that move between different languages.
Surreal found its place inside that movement.
The identity of Lado S begins the moment a visitor steps through the door.
Exposed brick keeps the feel of an old building. Pop art works fill the walls. Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dalí appear close to images of Travolta and Star Wars. Neon lights, projections, a Chesterfield sofa and the stage complete the setting.
Every element takes part in the story of the house.
At lunchtime, natural light reveals the details of the townhouse and creates a calmer room. At night, the neon, the projections and the music change its appearance. The same space takes on another rhythm through the day.
That shift follows an important trait of Surreal: the house adapts to different moments. It can host a lunch, a meeting, a celebration, a corporate event or a night of live music.
The menu carries the visual identity of Surreal onto the plates. Films, artworks, series, songs and video games appear as creative references.
These names create a first connection with the repertoire of whoever is reading the menu. The flavour completes the story.
Surreal’s drinks list is called Liquid Gallery and works as an exhibition. Paints gave way to spirits, brushes became bar spoons and canvases became glasses and cups. Each cocktail is a piece, and it joins the same conversation started by the kitchen, the music and the room.
The exhibition continues with the Surreal Classics, the Little Deliriums — shots served together —, an alcohol-free section and the cocktail classics. There are almost 40 cocktails across different styles, bases and intensities.
You can explore it by favourite ingredient, by cultural reference or by the curiosity a name stirs.
Music helps mark the days of the week at Lado S.
The calendar brings artists, audience and food together inside the same townhouse. The stage is part of the room and keeps the performance close to the tables.
On live music nights there may be a cover charge. Artists, times and prices should be checked on the official Surreal programme before visiting.
The townhouse also opens for lunch every day, from noon to 4pm.
That slot shows a calmer version of Surreal. The signature kitchen stays on stage, while the room follows the rhythm of the middle of the day.
Lunch serves personal meetings, work meals, celebrations and groups who want to talk more calmly. On Saturdays and Sundays, the house stays open straight through to the evening.
Anyone who knows the house from its music finds another atmosphere during the day. Anyone who arrives for lunch can watch the space transform until the night programme begins.
Lado S also shows in the way people are welcomed.
The team introduces dishes, explains ingredients, guides choices from the list and follows the rhythm of each table. For birthdays and group gatherings, the house can arrange bookings and details directly over WhatsApp.
Groups of up to six can book through the official platform. Events and larger tables are handled by message, which allows the number of guests, the time and the format of the occasion to be agreed in advance.
The idea gains strength when every point speaks to the others. Room, service, music, food and drinks all help build the memory of a visit.
The location takes part in that identity too.
Rua Paulo Barreto sits close to the neighbourhood's main streets, the metro station and several cultural spaces. The address makes it easy to combine Surreal with exhibitions, walks, cinema and other plans across the Zona Sul.
Inside the house, Botafogo appears through that urban mix. There is room for Sunday lunch, the Tuesday band, the after-work meeting, the Saturday birthday and the table that stays for one more drink.
Lado S works as a meeting point for those different scenes in the neighbourhood.
Surreal is at Rua Paulo Barreto, 102, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
Bookings for up to six people can be made on the official reservations page. Larger groups, birthdays and events are handled by message on the house WhatsApp.
The music programme, the menu and the latest news are also available on the website and on Surreal's Instagram.
